Children's Ministry
First Presbyterian recognizes children as an important part of our community of faith, and welcomes them to take an active part in worship, in learning, and in loving one another, as Christ first loved us. Whether you have children or grandchildren, now or in the years to come, we hope that you will choose to help them grow in faith and knowledge here at First.
"Whoever welcomes one such child
in my name welcomes me."
Matthew 18:5

Have your young ones participate as they are able in Sunday worship.
Elementary school age children are encouraged to remain throughout the
Sunday morning worship service, while younger children are given the
opportunity to leave for the nursery after the children’s prayer with the
minister and passing of the peace at the 10:55 service. On Sundays, audio
from the Sanctuary is broadcast in the Widman Room (107) for parents who
prefer to worship there with their children.
Young people may participate in worship in a variety of other ways as well; when appropriate, we encourage you to have your children:
· Pick up and use the Worship Bags which are available in the Narthex.
· Pray with the pastor and pass the peace.
· Donate allowance money and help pass offering plates for the 5 Cents A Meal Offering which benefits the hungry in Asheville.
· Gather with other children during Holy Baptisms.
· Help carry Communion elements to the Communion table.
· Sing in one of the choirs for K-5th graders.
· Serve as an acolyte (grades 4-8).
· Take part in special services.
Nursery care is provided for infants through 5-year-olds during Faith Development both Sunday services, Time Out for Every One on weekday mornings, Wednesday night supper programs, and as needed during special events.
Our nursery staff and volunteers provide loving, welcoming care to nurture our children in God’s love. We appreciate our volunteers during the 10:55 a.m. Sunday service and Faith Development, and welcome any additional helpers.
Have your children learn about the Bible in our Faith Development Classes.
Children’s Faith Development is held each Sunday at 9:45 a.m. for the
following age groups:
Infants-Beginning Walkers: Room 102 – Enjoy reading, rocking and play
Walkers-2 years: Room 103- Bible story and activity
3 years through pre-K: Room 101 – music, a Bible story and a related activity.
K through 5th grade: Room 104 – Bible Journeys, a multi-sensory, interactive environment for learning Bible stories. Classrooms are set up as four workshops: art, computer, drama/movie and puppets. Children rotate within their own age group to a different workshop each week, studying one story for approximately four weeks. K-1st grade begin the hour with choir and then rotate to a workshop room.
Send your children each summer to our lively Marketplace 29AD.
In this multi-congregational Vacation Bible School, children experience the
excitement of a Judean marketplace, where Jesus might be found teaching and
healing. Activities include storytelling, drama, visiting the Synagogue, and
making crafts that the shopkeepers display.
Involve the whole family in fellowship.
Participate in special events like our annual Wednesday night Block Party,
apple picking, our Fall Festival, Christmas caroling, service projects,
picnics and more. Please watch The First Chronicle newsletter for upcoming
activities.
