FIRST PRESBYTERIAN OUTREACH MINISTRY

Mission Statement

The Outreach Committee of First Presbyterian Church – Asheville, as part of the body of Christ and disciples of Christ, endeavors to share the boundary-breaking love of Christ in the heart of Asheville and in the whole world through the support and benevolence of our congregation.

Prayerful discernment of requests and needs guide the process for helping those in need. In addition to financial support, members of our congregation continue to give many volunteer hours of time and talent to projects. Over 10% of the church budget (pledged income) goes to support benevolence giving. This percentage does not include special offerings or contributions in-kind, such as the use of our space for various groups.

Our Outreach Committee usually meets at 4:30p.m. on the 2nd Wednesday of most months. Contact chairperson Wayne Drummond or staff liaison Michael Poulos for more information.

Upcoming Opportunities

Lunch for Women at Risk

May 21 (11:15 a.m. – noon)

The Women at Risk program is a community-based treatment alternative for women who are in jeopardy of going to jail or prison.  Women at Risk helps offenders to overcome self-destructive and abusive behaviors that brought them to the court’s attention and to the brink of imprisonment.  Often women who are hosted by Room in the Inn are participants in this program sponsored by the Western Carolinians for Criminal Justice. For more information, see http://www.wccj.org/womenatrisk.html

FPC has been asked to host lunch Wednesday, May 21 (11:15 a.m. –12 noon) for approximately 18 staff and clients. This would be a chance to share food and fellowship in an important way.  A small group from the church participated in February and it was a meaningful opportunity. If you would like to help, please contact Betsy Phillips at 274-4647.

Room in the Inn

June 1-8, 2008

Once again we will be hosting a week for the Room in the Inn program. A city-wide program sponsored by many local churches, RITI provides an overnight stay of hospitality for women who otherwise would be homeless. Volunteers are needed to prepare dinners, serve as dinner hosts, and spend the night as chaperones. Sign-up sheets are available at the table in the Wallace Foyer. For more information contact Michael Poulos (mpoulos@fpcasheville.org, 253-1431 x. 125) or Jo Nan Hester  (x 116).
