Saturday Sanctuary - Setting Up

Before opening to the general public, please assist the Lead Volunteer in setting up the Community Room and making refreshments.  The Community Room should be set with an area for viewing movies, a couple of tables for games, and a some chairs set up in a way that would encourage conversation.

Games and reading materials and other entertainment can be found in the closet just outside of the rest room.

The television and movies will be available in the Community Room.  Please show only family friendly, light moviesHeavy violence and upsetting drama are not conducive to a peaceful environment.  Please keep the television at a volume where people not watching the television can engage in conversation.

Please make coffee, popcorn, water and any other available refreshments available at the back of the room.  The lead volunteer will know where to find the supplies and can direct you.

While serving and preparing refreshments, please keep in mind that we wish to minimize the spread of germs, so passing community bowls is discouraged.  Also, large pastries or other items might be divided into smaller portions in the kitchen to discourage too much handling.

Using the Kitchen

The Lead Volunteer for your shift will lead you in the use and cleaning of the kitchen. This will involve making coffee and popping popcorn (not too hard!).

Cleaning Up

Narcotics Anonymous and Alcoholics Anonymous meet in the Community Room during the week.  They clean up after themselves and it is important that we do the same.  It is also very important to follow cleaning guidelines in order to minimize the potential spread of germs.  The neighbors we see often have limited access to health care and may have compromised immune systems.  It is very important that we keep the Community Room as clean as possible.  Cleaning supplies will be in the closet next to the bathroom.

At 4:00 PM:

  • Throw away any trash on the floor or outside
  • Sweep floor
  • Return any items taken from kitchen and clean as necessary
  • Clean bathroom:  wear gloves and clean the toilet and sink with cleaning solution.  Spray floor with bleach solution.  Allow to sit a couple of minutes.  Wipe up with mop or damp paper towel.
  • Clean any spills or messy messes in main room
  • Spray non-upholstered chairs lightly with bleach solution- allow to air dry
  • Wipe down tables with wipes or bleach solution and paper towel
  • Return furniture to its original, circular, position

Use common sense during the day when spills occur.  In the event of a spill of bodily fluids (blood, vomit, urine), please follow the procedures in the back of this handbook under “health precautions”.  Instructions for this type of spill can also be found in the cleaning supply box in the closet.
