The 12 Baskets Cafe is a new ministry of the Asheville Poverty Initiative (API). The Café receives donations of already prepared food from local organizations currently being thrown away. Quality food pulled from nightly hot bars, buffets, displays in grocery stores, etc. is picked up by an API volunteers and delivered to the Café to be re-purposed and shared.
Shifting from a "volunteer" model, 12 Baskets offers opportunities to meet and learn from those society often only recognizes as "the poor". Charity is one way of helping, but rarely invites transformation. In 12 Basket’s companion program everyone is encouraged to intentionally listen to and learning from those most impacted by poverty. It's an effort to recognize the gifts and wisdom of each person in our community.
