Our first Shared Ministry Night

One of the core values at FPCA is shared ministry – this congregation serves together! To foster shared ministry and wider participation, the committees of session are moving their meetings to a common night each month – a shared ministry night. Please come and add your voice, perspective, and talents to the ministry teams of the session – Worship, Christian Education, Engagement, Mission, Congregational Life, Stewardship, Finance, and Property.

Let’s share the work of ministry together!

Childcare is available. If you would like to “eat while you meet,” a simple to-go style meal will be available for pickup in the Fellowship Hall starting at 5:15pm.

The Christmas season concludes on January 6, Epiphany of the Lord, which falls on a Saturday in 2018. Following dinner and fellowship together at tables we will gather in the sanctuary for worship.  Epiphany worship celebrates the manifestation of God in the birth of Jesus Christ, expressed in the symbol of the star and the journey of the Magi.  Our Epiphany service is a Communion service, and it also will include our annual ritual of selecting a “star word” for the coming year.

Worship & the Arts Conference

Join us at Montreat Conference Center for Advent in September!

As a feature of the Montreat Worship & the Arts Conference, the Choirs of First Presbyterian Church of Asheville will lead an Advent Carol Service in Anderson Auditorium at 7:00 p.m. Wednesday, September 27th.

The service aims to capture something of the Advent longing and hope characteristic of the season.  It features anthems and hymns by composers both ancient and modern.  The service is structured around the great Advent Antiphons, known as the Great “Os”.  These were sung originally as responses to the Magnificat at the Evening Office of Vespers from the 17th to the 23rd of December.  Readings from scripture, anthems, and congregational hymns reflect on the theme of Christ who comes to judge and save his people.

The public is cordially invited to take part in this unique and beautiful service.

Wednesday Night Suppers & Special Study during Lent

Wednesday Night Suppers & Special Study during Lent

5 Wednesday Nights March 8, 15, 22, 29, April 5

Lent has traditionally been a time of fasting and spiritual preparation, just as Jesus fasted in the wilderness. The practice of self-denial becomes an opportunity to attend to our relationship with God; hunger pains are a reminder to pray or meditate or study, and a reminder that this is special time.
For these soup suppers, they're an opportunity for us as a congregation to embrace -- if not fasting -- simplicity. Making is more simple is a reminder to us that Lent is a season of fasting and turning our attention to God. It's also an opportunity to be in solidarity with so much of the world that lives on so little. A bowl of soup for us is a simple meal; many in the world, it's the best meal of the day.

Dinner is served from 5:30 to 6:15 p.m. Donations from the dinner will benefit mission work in the South Sudan, Madagascar and Guatemala.
READ ABOUT MADAGASCAR HERE

What difference can Jesus make here?

The question is profound, and the answer leads us to consider what Christian
theology calls redemption, a subject that is at the heart of Lent. Especially when we or one we know undergoes a tragic event, or when we face a situation that offers no happy ending, the question rumbles in our souls.... Where is redemption? What difference can Jesus make here?

Join us on Wednesdays evenings of Lent  for worship and study from 6:15 to 7:15 in the Fellowship Hall as we explore this profound question. The study will be taught by Rev. Dr. Patrick Johnson, and based on the short book Imagining Redemption by David Kelsey.  Kelsey, recently retired from Yale Divinity School, is one of the greatest theologians of his generation and his book is both insightful and accessible. It is not necessary to read the book to participate in the study, but for those who would like to do so it is available online or through the church office.

Reader's Guide to Lenten Study

Dear FPCA,

On Wednesday evenings this Lent I am leading a study of David Kelsey's book, Imagining Redemption. Kelsey is a leading contemporary theologian and brilliant thinker, and I'm excited for us to encounter his work. More importantly, his exploration is eye-opening and helps us to see how God is at work in our midst here and now. You don't have to have read the book to attend the study, but some of you are planning to read along. Both for those who are reading and those who are not, I thought it might be helpful to have a "reader's guide." There is a link below where you will find a summary guide through each chapter.

Dinner on Wednesday is at 5:30, and the study begins at 6:15 in the fellowship hall. Remember dinner is a simple soup with no reservations required, and donations will go toward international mission. I hope to see you there,

Blessings,
Patrick

Practicing Lenten Discipline

~Thank you Esther, Ann, Cindy, Len & Dick for dishwashing on Ash Wednesday~

~Thank you Esther, Ann, Cindy, Len & Dick for dishwashing on Ash Wednesday~

In an effort to have less of an impact on God’s creation, the Congregational Life Committee and the Creation Care Team are instituting a few changes in the kitchen. Our kitchen is well-stocked with stoneware cups, plates and bowls and metal flatware that can be re-used and not disposed of in the landfill. The difference is that the dishware and flatware needs to be washed and put away and this is where the opportunity lies.

If you are thinking of a Lenten discipline to adopt, volunteering to serve dinner and wash dishes after Wednesday night dinners is a practical option. No experience is needed (we will train you) and it is a unique setting to “deepen relationships.” You may volunteer for one, two or all Wednesdays. Contact Margaret Black with your selection: madgeblack@bellsouth.net or 828-230-6383. Please consider practicing this creation care action during Lent.
